Diabetes, reimagined and made easier

Demir Durmaz

How does an organization that aims to make life with diabetes easier present itself? This was a question I had the opportunity to explore on behalf of Vision T1 even before starting my studies. Since then, I have been combining the theoretical knowledge from my degree with valuable hands-on experience from the field.

Founding

At the beginning of 2024, my father founded the nonprofit organization Vision T1 e.V. in Germany together with employees from his specialized diabetes care practice. The organization’s goal is to serve as an information platform for people living with diabetes mellitus. Since my upcoming studies in Communication and Media were already known, I was entrusted with developing the organization’s online presence.

1st Hofer Diabetes Technology Day

In June, planning for the first event in September began right away. We quickly found sponsors, as many medical companies are interested in direct exchange with patients. But would we also be able to attract enough participants? We were hoping for 150 to 200 people.

The first step was developing the slogan Diabetes reimagined and made easier together with my father. Since I had no prior marketing experience at the time, the term marketing concept was still unfamiliar to me. The entire online presence was based on a single slogan. No corporate language. No key messages. No guiding idea.

Without really knowing what I was doing, I got started. First, I created Instagram and Facebook channels as well as a website for the organization. I filled them with all relevant information about the event and the association. I promoted the event through the available channels using a typographic post. At the time, I was naturally not yet familiar with the approach of using press releases.

In the end, the result was a well-structured website containing all relevant information about the 1st Hofer Diabetes Technology Day. This was also reflected on September 28, 2024 – the day of the event. Instead of the expected 150 to 200 participants, more than 400 people attended, making it a great success.

Next Steps

But what happens next? The 2nd Hofer Diabetes Technology Day is scheduled for April 2027. Even though the first event was a success, we cannot continue without a clear strategy. A comprehensive communication concept for the organization is currently being developed, along with a restructuring of the website. Once this is completed, the next step will be creating a marketing concept for our upcoming event. And there is one more thing on the horizon…
